prof. Walter BARATTA - Curriculum vitae

Walter Baratta was born in Bolzano in 1964. After high school he obtained a fellowship from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in 1983 and graduated cum laude in 1989 with a thesis on charge transfer complexes between rhenium(I) complexes and di-iodine. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1993 under the supervision of Professor Fausto Calderazzo with a course of work which led to the isolation of the first examples of coordination of cyclo-octasulfur and cyclo-heptaselenium on a metal center. During this period he also carried out research within the group of Professor Paul Pregosin at the Technical Institute of Zürich (CH), where he had the opportunity of studying multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and synthesize new platinum derivatives (January 1992 through December 1992). In 1994 he joined the group of Professor Wolfgang A. Herrmann at the Technical Institute of München (D) with a postdoctoral Alexander von Humboldt fellowship (June 1994 through May 1996), working on ansa metallocenes complexes of group 5 and 6 elements. In 1996 he became research associate at the Department of Chemical Sciences and Technologies of the University of Udine within the group of Professor Pierluigi Rigo, starting a work on homogeneous catalysis with ruthenium complexes. In addition to the employment of cyclopentadienyl ruthenium complexes as catalysts for carbene transfer reactions, a particular successful outcome of his research has been the isolation of rare examples of 14-electron complexes (Ru and Pt) stabilized by agostic interactions. His current interest is focused on asymmetric catalysis, with particular regard to the transfer hydrogenation and hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds promotes by a novel class of highly efficient ruthenium and osmium catalysts based on amino-pyridine ligands. He has held seminars in many universities around the world and he has been lecturer at international meetings.
Since January 2005 he is professor of chemistry at the University of Udine.
In 2008 he was awarded of the first prize of the Solvias Ligand Contest.
